Best Time to Visit the Serengeti: An Honest Month-by-Month Guide
Honest month-by-month advice from guides who live and work in the Central Serengeti year-round.
Quick Answer
For first-time visitors: June to October is the easiest time — clear skies, excellent visibility, and wildlife concentrated around water. January to February (calving season) and the green season (November, March) offer extraordinary experiences with fewer crowds and lower rates. The Central Serengeti, where RAFIKI sits, is exceptional year-round.
June to October — The Dry Season
Peak game viewing season. Animals concentrate around water, vegetation thins, and visibility is excellent. July to October is the window for Mara River crossings in the northern Serengeti.
January and February — Calving Season
Approximately 500,000 wildebeest calves are born in the southern Serengeti. Intense predator activity. Lower rates than peak season.
November and March — The Green Season Secret
Fresh vegetation, excellent birding, fewer vehicles in the bush, and rates meaningfully lower than peak season. Two of our favourite months.
Why the Central Serengeti Is Different
The Orangi River runs year-round, meaning resident wildlife is present in every month. The Central Serengeti does not depend on the migration to deliver exceptional game viewing.
